At Lighthouse of Hope MK, we believe that every child deserves to be loved and cared for. But with orphans in all corners of the world, why did we choose North Macedonia?
The Naskov family has always had a heart for children from hard places, and began their journey as therapeutic foster parents, and adopting two children from the US foster care system. Because of Zoran’s connection to North Macedonia, they decided the next natural step was to use their resources to help the children in institutions on that side of the world.
When they arrived in Macedonia in 2015, they were greeted with a new culture, beautiful mountains, and delicious food. North Macedonia has a rich history that stretches back to ancient times, with the ruins from cities from the 4th century BC sprinkled throughout its modern towns and villages. They learned so much in their first year. For instance, North Macedonia has the largest population of Roma people in Europe. Shutka is the largest Roma subdivision in the world, and is located in the center of Skopje (the capital of North Macedonia).
After getting settled, they found that the best way they could assist with the situation of orphans in North Macedonia was to contribute to the deinstitutionalization process that had begun in 2017.
Then, in 2018, there was an increase in foster families and small group homes in North Macedonia, so Lighthouse of Hope MK began the process of opening it’s very first group home - The JOY Home - that same year.
Through continued support, Lighthouse of Hope MK desires to provide family-style care for children in North Macedonia in several private, family-style group homes across the southern region of the country. By partnering with the Ministry of Social Services, we will be able to assist in the move toward deinstitutionalization and give the children the care and support they need.
